Fundamentals Level
No previous knowledge of American Sign Language is required. This class introduces basic grammar, vocabulary, fingerspelling (ASL Alphabet), numbers, the history of ASL, Deaf Culture, and much more. Vocabulary signs will focus on family signs, color signs, food signs, emergency signs, simple conversational phrases, and much more, through hands-on activities, games, small group activities, guest speakers, and lectures. All materials for the class are covered in the registration fee. This class is instructed about 90% voice on;10% voice off. |
Beginner Level
Beginner level classes build on the basic knowledge covered in the fundamental class, with more in-depth study of grammatical structure, syntax, handshapes, and classifiers of ASL. It is required that students have already taken the Fundamental ASL class before enrolling in the beginners class or discuss placement with the instructor. This class is instructed about 75% voice on; 25% voice off. Many students take several sessions of the beginners level classes before advancing to the intermediate level classes. Topics will vary each week. |
Intermediate Level
Intermediate level classes, builds on the basic knowledge covered in the fundamental and beginners classes, with more in-depth study of grammatical structure, syntax, handshapes, and classifiers of ASL. It is required that students have already taken at least the Fundamental ASL class before enrolling in the intermediate class or discuss placement with the instructor. This class is instructed about 75% voice on; 25% voice off. Many students take several sessions of the intermediate level classes before advancing to the advanced level classes. Topics will vary each week. |
